Corruption stopped military from defeating Boko Haram – Buhari

Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday attributed the inability of the Nigerian military to quickly defeat the Boko Haram sect to corruption.

He said the military started making progress in the anti-terrorism fight the moment his administration curbed corruption in the service.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President spoke while granting audience to the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr. Ahmed El-Tayeb, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari said the loss of 14 local government areas to Boko Haram had greatly tarnished the reputation of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The President noted, however, that with measures taken by his administration to curb corruption and provide better weaponry, logistics, training and welfare for soldiers on the frontlines, the Nigerian military has now almost totally incapacitated Boko Haram as a fighting force and recovered all territories that were lost to the terrorist sect.

“When we curbed corruption and removed the injustice in the military, we began to make progress,” President Buhari said.

Welcoming the support of Muslims across the world for Nigeria’s war against Boko Haram, the President said that the war against terrorism was also a war against injustice, which is not condoned by Islam and all the major religions.

“You can’t kill the innocent in churches or in mosques and shout Allahu Akbar,” the President said.

He added that the visit of El-Tayeb and his expression of solidarity with Nigeria in the war against terrorism was a clear indication of global Muslim support for Nigeria against the unjust killing of the innocent by terrorists.

The special senior assistant on public affairs to former president, Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe on Wednesday, May 18, appeared before a Federal High Court in Abuja as a defense witness in the trial of the spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh.

A witness testifying in the ongoing trial of spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party Olisa Metuh has told the court that Metuh was paid N400 million from the parties funds, budgeted for the exercise.

Testifying before Justice Okon Abang, Doyin Okupe told the court that as a leader of the party, the former president was in charge of issuing money for various party’s assignment.

Okupe said such duties are not designated to any subordinate. He also told the court that during a discussion with Jonathan, the former president had told him that due to Nigerians negative view about the PDP, and a need for a new face for the party, that Metuh and some consultants had made some suggestions to him.

He also said that the president further called for a meeting between the former Senate president, David Mark, former Chairman of the party, Tony Anenih, and Peter Obi.

He said the meeting which took place in November 2014, at the presidential villa saw presentations from Metuh and some media teams.

The presentations also got the approval of the former president, Okupe said. He said it was on this presidential approval that Jonathan instructed the payment N400 million for the project suggested by Metuh’s media team.

He added that the instruction came after the former president found some time to source for funding for the media project.

“Very early in the morning, I got a call from chief Metuh who told me that he has received N400 million from the president, as a candidate to election, the president had immense capacity to response. And this was demonstrated by the amount of money the president was able to raise, during the fund raising activity in the villa,” Okupe said.

Okupe continued: “Yet there are people who may not necessarily show publicly their support in public; who privately give their support to the president, substantial funds became available to the president, which he also made available for projects that he feels will enhance his course.”

The witness also said he is not aware of the source of the money for the media project aside that it came from the former president.

“I don’t know anything about this. It looks strange to me. The president could have paid for the campaign activities himself,” he said.

Having listened to the testimony, the trial judge, Okon Abang adjourned the matter to Thursday, May 19 for continuation.

According to The Cable, the Ijaw leader at a press conference in Abuja condemned the attack on oil installations and called on ex-militant leaders wade into the issue.

He lamented that the activities of the Niger Delta Avengers, the militant group responsible for recent bombings, was destroying the economy.

He said military option was not the best, adding that: “How many war theatres can our very limited number of military and security personnel be deployed at the same time? How effective can they be against Boko Haram, IPOB/MASSOB, Fulani herdsmen, kidnappers and, now, Niger Delta Avengers and their likes?” he asked.

“Violence is not, and has never been the answer. Dialogue is! Let’s all embrace dialogue. The Niger Delta is yet to recover from the season of violence which we experienced between 2005 and 2009…”

“Where are Chief Ateke Tom, Asari Dokubo, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias, Tompolo, the Leaders of MEND? Where are Mr. Victor Ben Ebikabowei, alias Boyloaf, Farah Dagogo, Africa, Young Shall Grow, Ogunbor, Ajara Roger Mackiver, Gen. Pastor Reuben, Shoot at Sight, Richard, Bostarise, and all the other ex-militants and Youths who wholeheartedly accepted the Amnesty and voluntarily surrendered arms and ammunition, and pledged to religiously abide by the terms?

Clark called on the Niger Delta Avengers, and all persons and groups, who feel aggrieved in the country, to shun violence and seek dialogue.

He said:“I appeal, today, this time in a more shrill voice! Though the perceptions have not changed on the evolving kaleidoscope of national political administration, I still remain firmly convinced that the destruction of our national economic golden goose is not a viable option.

Meanwhile, reports have emanated that militants operating in the Niger Delta have launched a fresh attack in the region, blowing up a gas pipeline operated by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) at Ogbembiri in southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa state.
