Victor Moses flourishes in his new role at Chelsea

“I have just got to listen to what the manager asks me to do in that position.”

In the the post “Why I flourish in my new role at Chelsea – Victor Moses” which appeared on Premium Times Nigeria,  Victor Moses was quoted saying he enjoys playing as a wing-back for Chelsea this season after he had struggled to join the Blues in 2012.

Moses spoke to the club’s website on why he has thrived as a wing-back despite having never played in that role before. He credits his outstanding performance to his Italian manager at the club, Antonio Conte.

The 25-year-old has featured in eight Premier League matches for Chelsea, including in their last three against Hull City, Leicester City and Manchester United which they have won without conceding.

He also featured for 86 minutes in their 2-0 win over Southampton on Sunday.

The Nigeria international said he was only focused on improving as a wing-back in Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation.

“I have not played there before. I have just got to listen to what the manager asks me to do in that position and the way he wants me to do it.

“It’s very important to understand your teammates; so, every game we played, I just want to keep on improving.

“The more games you play, the more experience you get in that position and I’m really relishing and enjoying it at the moment. Read more…

There are times in once career when you wander if you were making progress. This happened to the 25 year old young star. He most have wondered where his career was heading. Haven been loaned out to Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham United, this was certainly not the greatest time for Moses or his fans who were getting restless as it seem this didn’t really offer him a definitive way forward in his career.

ALAN SMITH  in his article  gave his suggestion on what he felt the problem was:

Part of the problem, you could argue, was that he never did quite enough elsewhere to make Chelsea think he should be back at Stamford Bridge competing for a place. Moses was like so many signed by the west London club – an obvious talent deemed surplus to requirements, so sent out on loan to keep his hand in.

Antonio Conte, however, saw enough in pre-season to make the Nigeria international part of his plans. And in the first game of this campaign against West Ham, Moses came off the bench to play his first league game for Chelsea in three years.

Even then, though, you could never have guessed how things would develop, how he would win a starting place in a side who must now be considered as real contenders in this title race. Sunday’s emphatic win at Southampton, Chelsea’s fourth on the spin without conceding a goal, proved another ringing endorsement of Conte’s five-man defence that has Moses going great guns on the right side.

You recall Mosses began his career in the Championship with Crystal Palace, before his performances caught the eye of Wigan Athletic, where he made his Premier League debut in 2010. After two years, his game had improved to the extent that European champions Chelsea were interested. Despite ten goals in all competitions during his first season, he spent his second season on loan to Liverpool, his third on loan at Stoke City and his fourth on loan at West Ham United.

Born in Nigeria, Moses represented England at under-16, under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels, but opted to play for Nigeria as opposed to being fully capped for England. He has gained over 20 caps for Nigeria since his debut in 2012, and played in their winning campaign at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
